This track provides a forum to discuss and present emerging topics, new projects, and ideas on how AI can contribute to the field of Ambient Intelligence.
Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a paradigm emerging from Artificial Intelligence (AI), where computers are used as proactive tools assisting people with their day-to-day activities, increasing human experiences.
Affect and social behaviour play an important role in the development of Ambient Intelligent Environments. Consideration of aspects like emotions, mood, personality traits, and attitudes in human-computer, human-robot, and human-environment interaction, especially insofar, as they provide better or more “natural” support for humans. These environments should be aware of the people’s needs, customizing requirements and forecasting behaviours.
AmI environments may be highly diverse, such as homes, offices, meeting rooms, schools, hospitals, control centres, transport facilities, tourist attractions, stores, sport installations, or music devices, among others.

In the thematic track on AmIA Environments we intend to bring together researchers from the different addressed fields, discussing issues under the Artificial Intelligence topics included in the context of Ambient Intelligence and Affective Environments. Researchers are welcome to present both theoretical and practical works as well as the lessons learned with their application in the varied range of domains. Emphasis will be placed on the presentation of concrete systems, discussion of implementation and development challenges, and sharing of relevant results and conclusions.

Call for Papers: 2nd Workshop on Language Understanding in the Human-Machine Era (LUHME)

The LUHME 2025 workshop Language Understanding in the Human-Machine Era is part of the 28th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ECAI 2025 (https://ecai2025.org/).

Workshop description

Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized the development of interactional artificial intelligence (AI) systems by democratizing their use. These models have shown remarkable advancements in various applications, such as conversational AI and machine translation, marking the undeniable advent of the human-machine era. However, despite their significant achievements, state-of-the-art systems still exhibit shortcomings in language understanding, raising questions about their true comprehension of human languages.

The concept of language understanding has always been contentious, as meaning-making depends not only on form and immediate meaning but also on context. Therefore, understanding natural language involves more than just parsing form and meaning; it requires access to grounding for true comprehension. Equipping language models with linguistics-grounded capabilities remains a complex task, given the importance of discourse, pragmatics, and social context in language understanding.

Assessing whether LLMs understand language is a doubly challenging task, as it necessitates not only grasping the intrinsic capabilities of LLMs but also examining their impact and requirements in real-world applications. While LLMs have shown effectiveness in various applications, the lack of supporting theories raises concerns about ethical implications, particularly in applications involving human interaction.

The “Language Understanding in the Human-Machine Era” (LUHME) workshop aims to reignite the debate on the role of understanding in natural language use and its applications. It seeks to explore the necessity of language understanding in computational tasks like machine translation and natural language generation, as well as the contributions of language professionals in enhancing computational language understanding.

Ethics Statement

Research reported at ECAI and at the LUHME workshop should avoid harm, be honest and trustworthy, fair and non-discriminatory, and respect privacy and intellectual property. Where relevant, authors can include in the main body of their paper, or on the reference page, a short ethics statement that addresses ethical issues regarding the research being reported and the broader ethical impact of the work. Reviewers will be asked to flag possible violations of relevant ethical principles. Such flagged submissions will be reviewed by a senior member of the programme committee. Authors may be required to revise their paper to include a discussion of possible ethical concerns and their mitigation.

Submission Instructions

Papers must be written in English, be prepared for double-blind review using the ECAI LaTeX template, and not exceed 7 pages (not including references). The ECAI LaTeX Template can be found at https://ecai2025.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/ecai-template.zip. Papers should be submitted via EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences?conf=luhme2025

Excessive use of typesetting tricks to make things fit is not permitted. Please do not modify the style files or layout parameters. You can resubmit any number of times until the submission deadline. The workshop papers will be published in the proceedings (further information will be provided soon).

As in the first edition of the LUHME workshop, we intend to publish accepted papers with ACL Anthology (https://aclanthology.org/volumes/2024.luhme-1/).

INTRODUCTION
Societies and industries face many challenges to be more intelligent and sustainable. In this context, many good practices and approaches are being explored, and numerous new contributions are being generated daily. Many good practices and procedures are being investigated, and several unique contributions emerge without benefitting from sufficient visibility. The track “Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Society” aims to overcome precisely this gap. An intelligent society looks to citizens’ problems and tries to maximize the use of high-potential innovative technologies by collaboration across multiple sectors so as to create more efficient, intelligent, and adaptable services, and, ultimately, to enable prosperity and resilience. This is where the concept of smart cities comes into play, as they are perfectly positioned to integrate smart infrastructures with human needs through community services. Connected and efficient cities and communities can lead to informed, engaged, and contented citizens.
However, to have an innovative society, intelligent industries are also necessary. The concept of Industry 4.0 is associated with the digital transformation of manufacturing and related sectors, as well as value-creation processes. Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a vital role in automating processes, predicting errors, and reducing failures. However, we are now witnessing post-Industry 4.0 developments in Europe and around the World, as led by eco-innovation and green (re-)industrialization”, driven by the transition to sustainable development. AI will have an even stronger role in these, as complex multi-disciplinary projects need its support.
In this evolution, industry and society must work together, and this is a truly multidisciplinary endeavour whereby AI is a key hinge and facilitator between technologies, people, goods, and services. The present conference track seeks to bring together researchers and professionals, enabling them to explore new solutions and applications across society and industry, including novelties and best practices that can be implemented in the real world. The event enters a new era of technical communication by demonstrating how scientific knowledge can be transferred to society and applied in industry using Data Science and AI approaches in topics such as “Business, Industry, and Smart Factory” and “Sustainable and Smart Cities and Societies”. IA4IS is open to receiving and selecting several high-quality contributions in these two areas, especially propositions related to cognitive computing platforms and applications, including technologies and infrastructures associated with AI, machine learning, big data processing and data analytics.

PAPER SUBMISSION
All papers should be submitted in PDF format through the EPIA’2025 submission Website. Submissions must be original and can be of two types: regular (full-length) papers should not exceed twelve (12) pages in length, whereas short papers should not exceed six (6) pages. Each submission will be peer-reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. The reviewing process is double-blind. The best-accepted papers will be published in the proceedings by Springer in the LNAI series (previous EPIA proceedings were indexed in Thomson ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, DBLP, and the ACM Digital Library). The remaining accepted papers will be published in the local proceedings with an ISBN.

*Authors of the best papers presented at the AI4IS track of EPIA will be invited to submit extended versions of their manuscripts for a Springer Special Issue or at other EPIA Fast-Track submission processes

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has historically relied on two key elements: data and algorithms.

However, the traditional Model-Centric AI paradigm has typically emphasized algorithms, often handling data as static entities.

Data are typically gathered, pre-processed, and kept unchanged, with significant efforts focused on refining learned models.

This conventional approach has led to the development of increasingly complex and opaque decision models, requiring substantial effort in data training.

On the other hand, the emerging Data-Centric AI (DCAI) paradigm focuses on the systematic and algorithmic generation of optimal data to fuel Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques.

The primary aim of the DCAI paradigm is to improve data quality, thereby achieving model accuracy deemed unattainable levels through model-centric techniques alone.

In this talk we will discuss the transformative effects of recent advancements in the DCAI paradigm on the future use of AI, ML and DL in data science.

The objective is to inspire further innovations in DCAI research, ultimately influencing the future landscape of in data science applications.

About the thematic track
This track aims to highlight the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence within the fields of architecture, engineering, and conservation, fostering innovations that include, among others, the following aspects:

  • Customized foundational models and AI frameworks applied to infrastructure resilience and structural monitoring;
  • Computer vision techniques, object detection, predictive modeling, and feature extraction essential for identifying and addressing defects in infrastructure, cultural heritage, and environmental systems;
  • AI applications for the three-dimensional reconstruction of historical artifacts and predictive maintenance of pavements, water supply systems, and other critical infrastructures;
  • Use of generative AI to support architectural design, urban planning, and the development of sustainable materials;
  • Leveraging data from satellites, drones, IoT sensors, and global collaborations, which are revolutionizing the analysis and understanding of large-scale datasets.

Publication and Presentation

Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings published in Springer’s Lecture Notes on Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. Selected high-quality papers may also be invited for extended versions to be published in a special virtual issue of the Journal of Cultural Heritage.
